Useful tool for self-assessment of quality, structure and recyclability of packing materials

It is not easy for a producer obligated to recycle (POR) to do self-assessment of quality, structure and recyclability of packing materials because  the Ministry of Environment Notification, PACKING MATERIAL RECYCLABILITY RATING STANDARD (포장재 재활용 용이성 등급평가 기준) is complicated and quality, structure and recyclability of packing material’s body, label, cap, and other components shall be evaluated both separately and combinedly.

The online evaluation tool in the IEPR website (https://www.iepr.or.kr/ctm/psse/packngEvlCalr/eprPackngEvlCalr.do#) can be a great solution to resolve this difficulty.

When you click the magnifier icon, a new window pops up. There, you can choose the PACKING MATERIAL RECYCLABILITY RATING STANDARD that is currently effective and the type of packaging material you’re going to evaluate.

For example, in evaluating EPE buffer, you can choose 05 single/composite general expanded synthetic resin material. In the page that shows up when you click “확인(Confirm)”, you can see what conditions affect the evaluation of EPE buffer. In other words, you should obtain information and documentary evidence to confirm each condition.

That is, you should know body’s material name and color, and other components’ material name and separability from the body, if any. Photos and the certificate issued by the exporter in the form below can be the documentary evidence of the evaluation.

If the EPE buffer is white and no label is attached, you can check the boxes of relevant conditions. Then, the system shows self-assessment rating.

The tool is also useful to determine whether the new application for evaluation of the quality · structure of packing materials shall be filed. If there are two packaging materials for which boxes to be checked is the same, you should choose one and use it as a representative for all of packaging materials with the same conditions. For each combination of checked boxes, only one application can be submitted.
